A Heartwarming Moment at Royal Family KIDS Camp Parker: A Volunteer’s Story
At Royal Family KIDS Camp Parker, we’re not just about fun activities and making memories – we’re also about building relationships, nurturing trust, and providing a sense of safety and security for the children. For many volunteers, like Ed, the joy of serving comes from the quiet moments of connection with the campers. One story that stands out comes from Ed, who works with the woodworking activity and takes on the responsibility of being a "hall monitor" during the evening.
Ethan (name changed for privacy) was a young camper who couldn’t contain his excitement one evening. He had been working hard on his derby racecar in the woodworking activity, and the next day’s race was all he could think about. But as excited as he was, Ethan couldn’t quite settle down for bed.
"I had to keep reminding Ethan that everyone else was asleep, but he was so full of energy," Ed recalls. Every ten minutes or so, Ethan would come out into the hallway with a new toy or a modified version of his derby car. He couldn’t wait to perfect it, knowing that the next day he’d have the chance to race it. The energy and passion in his eyes were undeniable, but Ed knew it was time for Ethan to rest.
After 45 minutes of this back-and-forth, Ed gently but firmly told Ethan, “You have to go to bed now, buddy. Everyone’s already asleep.”
That’s when Ethan, exhausted from his excitement, looked up at Ed and said, “Well, you’re not asleep.”
Ed chuckled, and with a warm smile, he explained, “You have to go to sleep before I can. I’m here to keep you safe, and we need you to rest so we can have a fun day tomorrow.”
With Ed’s kind words and assurance, Ethan finally settled down and drifted off to sleep, ready for another exciting day at camp.
For Ed, and so many other volunteers at Royal Family KIDS Camp Parker, it’s these simple but meaningful moments that make the experience truly special. Being there for these kids – whether it’s guiding them through an activity, offering a comforting word at bedtime, or simply being a safe presence – is what makes camp unforgettable.
Volunteers like Ed make a lasting impact, showing the children that they are seen, heard, and valued, while also providing a sense of structure and security. Royal Family KIDS Camp Parker is about more than just summer camp; it’s about offering love, care, and a place where kids can feel like they belong.
